If you are a US citizen trying to bring your spouse to the United States, you are the sponsor. However, if your income does not meet the federal poverty guidelines, which is 125% of the poverty guideline, you cannot support your spouse financially. In that case, you need to choose a joint sponsor. A joint sponsor is someone who agrees to put their income available for you to sponsor your relative. This person can be a US citizen or a US resident living in the United States or its territories, and they must be at least 18 years old.
