If you are someone who lives in the United States of America and is trying to bring your wife, child, or parent who is a non-relative to the country, the first thing you need to do is fill out form I-130. Once you fill out this form, you have to be able to sponsor your relative, whether it's your spouse, children, or parent. To show the US government that you are able to financially support your relative once they come to the United States, you need to fill out an affidavit of support form. However, people often get confused about who the sponsor, joint sponsor, and household member are. The sponsor is basically you, the petitioner. If you are a US citizen trying to bring your spouse to the United States, you are the sponsor. However, if your income does not meet the federal poverty guidelines, which is 125% of the poverty guideline, you cannot support your spouse financially. In that case, you need to choose a joint sponsor. A joint sponsor is someone who agrees to put their income available for you to sponsor your relative. This person can be a US citizen or a US resident living in the United States or its territories, and they must be at least 18 years old.
